Piazza, a new contemporary ballet by Fili Pelacchi

As villagers gather in their town square—the piazza—the ordinary pleasures of life, of visiting with neighbors and exchanging news and gossip at the market, are undercut by a current in the village of discomfort, disconnection, and disapproval. The rigidity of the old ways comes into conflict with the joyous self-expression of the villager Francesca and her friends, but in the end it is human connectedness, tenderness, joy, and love that prevail, as the village comes together as one.

Set to music of the Baroque period, Piazza was created for and on a multigenerational troupe of more than 30 dancers (ages 20s through 70s) from the Flux Flow dance studio in Columbus. Dedicated amateur dancers, many of whom began dancing only as adults, they are part of a village of their own: the Flux Flow dance community, a welcoming, supportive, diverse, come-as-you-are studio in Columbus, which offers classes at all levels and across many genres. The choreographer is co-founder and co-owner of the studio with their spouse Russell Lepley.

This production was supported by the Flux Flow community, Columbus Dance Alliance, and Harmony Project.
